The restaurant would serve dishes from organic farm products that about 300 farmers produce.
Coinciding with the international women’s day on March 8, Bhutan Association of Women Entrepreneurs (BAOWE) opened a restaurant, Nangyi-Aum in Thimphu, to serve as an outlet for farm products of about 300 farmers from across the country.
The restaurant, located above Motithang Ozone Park and Bhutan Oil Distributors (BOD), would serve dishes made from local organic produce.
BAOWE’s chief executive officer and founder, Damchae Dem, said that a housewife, Tshering Choden from Zhemgang, would run the restaurant and it would use ingredients available in the country such as rice from Paro, buckwheat from Bumthang, cottage cheese from Haa, and chillies and pepper from Trongsa.
Few other women would support Tshering Choden in managing the restaurant.
The restaurant would serve a set of seven items at Nu 500. Customers can also order dishes apart from the set menu, which would be charged accordingly.
Damchae Dem said that although Bhutan is blessed with laws, rules, tradition and culture that promote women rights, most women are still housewives. “It could be because of our property rights going to the girls and they have to look after the farm and property.”
She said it could also be the reason why women say they have enough and are self-sufficient with their land, and do not become entrepreneurs or seek employment. “You will only say it is enough when you don’t know what else is out there. It is important to have exposure. It is important to know what more can be achieved.”
She said that if the restaurant is successful, it has plans to provide lunch to students of nearby schools who are unable to bring packed lunch. “When the students are unable to bring lunch, they resort to eating unhealthy food.”
Thimphu thrompon Kinlay Dorjee, during the opening of the restaurant, acknowledged BAOWE’s efforts and said that such projects are welcomed in the city. “We would like to see women and youth come together to make our city much more vibrant and lively with fewer problems.”
He said that such initiatives taken by various stakeholders have the capacity to benefit, grow and help bind the community. “Developmental activities should happen within a community so that everybody will say this is ours and that we want to own and maintain it.”
